Voter Services & Programs

Voter Services activities are primarily focused on informing voters and promoting citizen participation in government, including voting. Voter Services encompasses multiple League of Women Voters of Southern Arizona (LWVSAZ) programs and direct services.

Voter Services volunteers are trained and supported to provide nonpartisan, reliable information about voting and elections to the residents of Southern Arizona, and conduct activities to register voters and increase voter turnout. Voter Services creates partnerships with other nonpartisan community organizations to reach area residents and increase the League’s impact.

Voter Registration

The Voter Registration team is active year-round, promoting and assisting voter registration, and providing information to citizens about the voting process. LWVSAZ is especially interested in reaching new voters and those who might have difficulty registering to vote or updating their registration.

Volunteers receive all needed training, materials and guidance. As a trained member of the Voter Registration Team, you will have opportunities to register voters and provide voter information at:

Voter registration tables at community sites and events
High schools
Senior housing and assisted living facilities
Naturalization ceremonies, in collaboration with the Pima County Recorder’s Office

Voter Education Programs

LWVSAZ has a long tradition of educating voters about the most important issues of the day from a nonpartisan perspective.

The Voter Education Programs Committee plans, conducts, and/or sponsors four to six educational programs per year that feature expert panel members and discussions that explore the impact of public policies on communities and citizens in Southern Arizona. The programs are free and open to the public, presented live at community locations, virtually on Zoom, and live-streamed on Facebook.

League volunteers can serve on the planning committee for any or all of the programs, and/or help at the events.

Candidate and Issue Forums

Prior to elections, LWVSAZ hosts or sponsors public forums where citizens can hear from candidates or learn about ballot issues. The Candidate and Issue Forums Committee plans, promotes, and conducts those forums. LWVSAZ also offers training workshops for organizations that want to conduct their own forums.

Experienced Forums Committee members train League volunteers to serve as forum moderators, timers, question sorters, and other roles. Volunteers can serve on the planning committee for any or all of the forums, and/or help at the events.

Vote411 online tool

Vote411 is the national League of Women Voters' "one-stop-shop" for election-related information, to which state and local Leagues can contribute information. Volunteer duties may include: obtaining and contributing information about Southern Arizona elections, candidates and ballot issues; providing requested information, such as LWVSAZ positions; providing links to recorded LWVSAZ candidate and issue forums; contributing to content on state ballot measures; and promoting Vote411 through LWVSAZ social media channels.

Voter Education Publications

The Publications Committee produces and distributes two voter education pieces: “A Guide to Voting in Pima County" and “A Citizen's Directory of Elected Officials.” The Directory is updated after elections.

Volunteers may research information, write and edit content, and/or assist with distribution through the area. Committee members may also be called upon to create new materials for Voter Services programs.

Library Liaisons

League members who serve as Library Liaisons are responsible for keeping Pima County public libraries stocked with League materials about voting and elections, for public dissemination.

Nongovernmental Election Assistance

The LWVSAZ Nongovernmental Elections Committee is available to oversee and monitor elections for groups such as Homeowners Associations (HOAs), resident councils, labor unions, and community organizations, upon request. The League may be asked to produce ballots, staff and monitor polling locations, count ballots, or administer the entire election. Training and support from experienced members are provided.

Running & Winning

The Running & Winning Committee plans and conducts a one-day interactive workshop at one area high school each year in order to inform female student leaders about the process of conducting an election campaign and serving in public office. The girls meet with women in elected positions, create a mock campaign, have the “candidate” give a speech on an important topic, and vote for the best “candidate.”
